Understanding Trading Charges

Brokerage: The primary fee paid to the stockbroker for facilitating the trade. For many discount brokers, this is flat ₹20 or a percentage like 0.03%.

STT (Securities Transaction Tax): Levied by the Central Government. Delivery trades attract 0.1% on both sides, while Intraday attracts 0.025% only on Sell.

Exchange Charges: Fees collected by NSE/BSE. Currently approx 0.00297% for the Cash segment.

SEBI Charges: Regulatory fees for market oversight, set at ₹10 per crore of turnover.

Stamp Duty: State government tax for transfer of securities, usually 0.015% on the Buy side for delivery trades.

GST: 18% tax applied on the sum of all service-related charges (Brokerage + Txn + SEBI).

Real-World Calculation Scenarios

Equity Delivery (Investor)

Buying 100 shares of an IT stock at ₹3000 and selling at ₹3200.

Total Turnover: ₹6,20,000

STT Impact: ₹620 (High as it applies on Buy and Sell)

Net P&L: Gross profit is ₹20,000, but after ~₹1,000 in charges, net is ₹19,000.

Equity Intraday (Trader)

Scalping 500 shares for a ₹2 move (Buy ₹500, Sell ₹502).

STT Savings: Only ₹62.75 (0.025% on Sell only)

Breakeven: Approx 0.40 points. Any move above ₹0.40 is net profit.

Net P&L: Gross profit ₹1,000 becomes ~₹800 net after all taxes.

Excel/Mathematical Logic

Total_Turnover = (BuyPrice * Qty) + (SellPrice * Qty)

Brokerage = Total_Turnover * (Rate / 100)

STT_Delivery = Total_Turnover * 0.001

STT_Intraday = (SellPrice * Qty) * 0.00025

GST = (Brokerage + TxnCharge + SEBI_Fee) * 0.18
